fina-logo1 fina-logo2 fina-logo3 wa-logo Swimming was already part of the competitions at the first Olympic Games in 1896, but it should still take 12 years until the founding of an international federation.
During the 1908 Olympic Games in London an international conference took place under the direction of the Organizing Committee on 19th of July at the Manchester Hotel. The most important result was the agreement to find a worldwide swimming organization.
The agreed tasks of this international organizations should be:
1. Creation of uniform rules for swimming, diving and water polo to be used in Olympic Games and other international competitions.
2. Approval of world records and keep a world record list.
3. Organization of the swimming competitions at the Olympic Games.
The eight founding members of the Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) were: BEL, DEN, FIN, FRA, GER, GBR, HUN and SWE. The national associations of these countries bindingly declared the rules at a second conference on 01.08.1909 in Paris.
In the 1920s, a FINA office was established. The International Water Polo Board and the International Diving Committee were created in 1928. Further Technical Committees succeed after the World War 2: Swim Committee in 1954, for Synchronized swimming in 1956, for Open water swimming in 1992 and some others.
At the congress on 14.09.2000 the word „amateur‟ was deleted from the name. The official notation is now Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).
At the extraordinary congress on 12.12.2022 FINA adopted the new name World Aquatics.
